Rochas Okorocha condemned by Igbo group for demolition of Owerri main market

Rochas Okorocha has been terribly codemned by the Lagos State chapter of Mezie Owerri (a socio-cultural organisation of Owerri natives) for the use of force in the demolition of Owerri main market.

The group said the way the market was demolished by the government led to some casualties. It added that the approach was undemocratic and had only shown that the welfare of the people did not matter to the state government.

A statement signed by the group’s president, Dr. Simpson Osuagwu, on Friday partly read, “We condemn in strong terms, the demolition of Eke Ukwu market and the attendant use of unwarranted force in such exercise, leading to the loss of innocent lives and destruction of property, in defiance of a subsisting court order restricting the government from carrying out the action.

It is not only disheartening, but completely unimaginable, that a governor who has sworn an oath to abide by the rule of law will go all out to disobey the laws of
the land, using the same state apparatus that he was supposed to use to protect the citizens to destroy their lives and property.

From all indications, what the government of Imo State under the administration of Rochas Okorocha has demonstrated is that their goal is not to seek the welfare and
survival of its citizens, but to grab power at all cost.

The claim of the government that the Eke Ukwu Owerri market has become a hideout for criminals is extremely absurd, unfounded and does not sound serious to any
right-thinking mind.

One would ask how possible it is for criminals to hide in the market place.”
